Bitcoin robbery convict Adam Iza sentenced to 78 more months for $37M Meta ad fraud and hiring off-duty sheriff’s deputies

The 78-month sentence against Adam Iza exposes how proceeds from a $37 million Meta ad fraud scheme helped finance private security and abuse of law-enforcement resources.

Adam Iza, who called himself “The Godfather,” was sentenced on Oct. 5 to 78 months in federal prison for a $37 million scheme that hijacked Meta business ad accounts and bankrolled a private security team of off-duty Los Angeles County sheriff’s deputies.

The sentence will run alongside the 15-year term he received in Connecticut for an attempted bitcoin robbery, and he must pay $23.4 million in restitution.

Meta ad fraud money funded private security

Between August 2021 and April 2022, Iza employed Los Angeles-based deputies as personal security personnel, according to the case presented by federal prosecutors. Authorities said he worked with the deputies to obtain law-enforcement records, personal information and court-authorized search warrants targeting people with whom he had disputes.

The allegations went beyond ordinary private security. Prosecutors said Iza enlisted the deputies to intimidate and threaten his adversaries, effectively turning law-enforcement capabilities into instruments for private conflicts.

Five former deputies who worked for Iza have been convicted of federal offenses connected to the broader operation. Michael David Coberg, for example, is serving a 63-month prison sentence for helping Iza extort a rival and arranging a sham drug arrest involving another adversary.

Another former deputy, Eric Chase Saavedra, was accused of improperly obtaining search warrants while operating the company that supplied Iza with security services.

The government emphasized the boundaries that wealthy individuals cannot cross when dealing with law enforcement. In a sentencing memorandum, prosecutors said people with money “cannot purchase access to confidential databases, investigative tools, warrants, arrests, badges, or firearms for use in private disputes.”

That warning underscores the unusual intersection between the Meta ad fraud proceeds and the alleged misuse of official law-enforcement powers.

Meta customers absorbed losses from the scheme

The financial scheme allegedly operated from December 2020 through September 2024, during which Iza fraudulently gained access to Meta business advertising accounts and their credit facilities. He then sold access to advertising companies, with his companies receiving approximately $37 million from those transactions between 2020 and 2022.

The consequences of the Meta ad fraud extended to legitimate customers. Meta customers were charged for advertising campaigns they had not ordered, while Facebook’s parent company refunded affected customers and absorbed the resulting losses.

Iza later admitted receiving at least $36.4 million in gross income from the operation between 2020 and 2023. He also admitted conduct that caused approximately $13.3 million in losses to the Internal Revenue Service.

The tax case added another layer to the prosecution. Authorities said Iza concealed his ownership of cryptocurrency trading company Zort and transferred corporate income to cryptocurrency custodians as part of efforts to evade taxes.

The alleged Meta ad fraud therefore did not operate in isolation. Prosecutors tied the proceeds to a wider financial structure involving cryptocurrency, concealed business interests and tax obligations.

Meta ad fraud case intersects with bitcoin conviction

Iza pleaded guilty in January 2025 to conspiracy against rights, wire fraud and tax evasion. His latest 78-month sentence is being served at the same time as the 15-year federal sentence imposed in Connecticut last month over an attempted bitcoin robbery.

The concurrent structure means Iza will not serve the two sentences consecutively. However, the $23.4 million restitution order remains in effect.

The Connecticut case involved a separate scheme in which Iza was sentenced to 15 years for his role in an attempted bitcoin robbery. The combination of the cases places the Meta ad fraud prosecution within a broader criminal history involving cryptocurrency and financial crimes.

The sentencing also followed the case against Iza’s girlfriend, Iris Rabaya Au, who was sentenced last month to 18 months in prison for concealing $2.6 million from the IRS. Her case further demonstrated the financial consequences surrounding Iza’s operations.

At the center of the prosecution remains the alleged Meta ad fraud, which prosecutors said generated tens of millions of dollars while leaving Meta customers to be reimbursed for unauthorized advertising charges.

Meta ad fraud highlights limits on private power

The case presents an unusual chain of events: advertising-account access generated millions of dollars, some of that wealth supported private security arrangements, and prosecutors said those arrangements involved the improper use of confidential law-enforcement information and investigative tools.

For prosecutors, the Meta ad fraud case was therefore about more than unauthorized advertising charges. It also raised questions about how financial resources can be used to obtain access to government systems and personnel.

Iza’s sentencing does not erase the convictions of the former deputies involved in the broader operation. Their cases remain part of the federal government’s effort to establish accountability for the alleged misuse of official authority.

The case also illustrates how a financial crime can generate consequences far beyond its immediate monetary losses. In this instance, the Meta ad fraud allegedly helped finance an operation that prosecutors said crossed the line between legitimate private protection and the improper exploitation of law-enforcement authority.

Ultimately, the Meta ad fraud prosecution ended with a 78-month prison term, a multimillion-dollar restitution order and a concurrent sentence structure that links Iza’s financial crimes to his separate bitcoin-robbery conviction. The government’s case also leaves a broader lesson: access to money does not confer legitimate access to government databases, warrants, weapons or police powers.

The final outcome underscores the scale of the Meta ad fraud allegations while placing Iza’s conduct within a wider federal crackdown on financial deception, tax evasion and the misuse of public authority.
