Brooklyn man who posed as Coinbase support gets 4 to 12 years, must repay nearly $16 million

A Sheepshead Bay man has been sentenced after prosecutors said he stole nearly $16 million in cryptocurrency from about 100 Coinbase users through a long-running social engineering scheme.

A 23-year-old Brooklyn man who posed as a Coinbase representative to drain crypto from about 100 users has been sentenced to four to 12 years in prison. Ronald Spektor, of Sheepshead Bay, must also pay nearly $16 million in restitution and forfeit more than $500,000 in cash, crypto and property.

The case came to a conclusion Wednesday, Sept. 23, when Spektor received his prison sentence. In addition to incarceration, he was ordered to forfeit more than $500,000 in cash, cryptocurrency and personal property and to pay nearly $16 million in restitution.

How the crypto scam targeted Coinbase users

According to the Brooklyn District Attorney’s Office, Spektor operated under the handle @lolimfeelingevil and allegedly presented himself to victims as a Coinbase representative.

The crypto scam relied on claims that victims’ accounts were in danger of being hacked. Prosecutors said Spektor used those warnings to persuade users to transfer their cryptocurrency into wallets they believed were secure and controlled by legitimate representatives.

Instead, prosecutors said the wallets were accessible to Spektor. Once the assets were transferred, he allegedly drained the accounts and laundered the stolen funds. Coinbase is a cryptocurrency exchange that enables users to buy, sell and store digital assets.

The allegations illustrate how a crypto scam can exploit trust in a familiar financial platform without necessarily requiring a direct breach of the platform itself. In the case described by prosecutors, the alleged method depended on convincing account holders to take actions themselves after receiving what they believed were legitimate security warnings.

Prosecutors describe long-running digital robbery

Brooklyn District Attorney Eric Gonzalez said the sentence addressed the scale and duration of the alleged scheme.

“Today’s sentencing holds the defendant accountable for a brazen, long-running social engineering scam that amounted to a digital robbery of nearly 100 victims,”  Brooklyn District Attorney Eric Gonzalez.

Prosecutors said some victims lost $1 million or more. They also alleged that Spektor openly discussed or celebrated the crypto scam on messaging and social platforms, including Discord and Telegram.

The allegations indicate that the scheme was not limited to relatively small individual transfers. According to prosecutors, losses in some cases reached seven figures, contributing to an overall amount approaching $16 million.

The case also highlights the role of social engineering in cryptocurrency-related theft. Rather than relying solely on technical methods, the alleged scheme centered on impersonation, warnings about account security and convincing victims to transfer their own assets.

Guilty plea brings $16 million restitution order

Spektor pleaded guilty on Sept. 2 under an agreement that provided for the four-to-12-year sentence. Prosecutors had originally sought a substantially longer prison term of seven to 21 years.

The guilty plea formally resolved the charges stemming from the alleged crypto scam, while the financial penalties were designed to address the losses described by prosecutors.

Beyond the prison term, Spektor was ordered to forfeit cash, cryptocurrency and personal property valued at more than $500,000. He was also ordered to pay nearly $16 million in restitution, matching the amount prosecutors said was stolen from victims.

The financial orders add another dimension to the case. While imprisonment addresses the criminal sentence, restitution and forfeiture are intended to account for the financial consequences associated with the alleged crypto scam.

Crypto scam case underscores risks of impersonation

The prosecution provides a detailed example of how impersonation can be used to manipulate cryptocurrency users. In this case, prosecutors said Spektor’s alleged approach depended on creating the appearance of an urgent security problem and then directing victims toward wallets that were ultimately accessible to him.

The crypto scam allegedly affected Coinbase users in multiple parts of the country rather than being confined to a single local victim group. Prosecutors said approximately 100 people were targeted, with some individuals losing at least $1 million.

The sentence closes the criminal proceeding described in the supplied report, with Spektor receiving four to 12 years behind bars and financial orders totaling millions of dollars. The case also demonstrates the substantial losses that can result when cryptocurrency holders are persuaded to surrender control of their assets through deceptive communications.

For users, the alleged mechanics of the crypto scam show why unexpected requests to transfer digital assets in response to account-security warnings can carry significant financial consequences. In the prosecution’s account, the victims were persuaded that they were protecting their holdings when the transfers instead placed the assets within the defendant’s reach.

The case ultimately involved a crypto scam valued at nearly $16 million, around 100 alleged victims and a prison sentence of up to 12 years.
