Senator Bernie Sanders vowed to “take on crypto, the AI industry, AIPAC and other billionaire super PACs” in a July 21 post on X, escalating his campaign against industry political spending as he stumped for Minnesota Senate candidate Peggy Flanagan in Minneapolis.

Crypto firms have poured $189 million into the 2026 election cycle so far, according to watchdog group Public Citizen, already surpassing their full 2024 total of $170 million.

In a July 21 post on X, Sanders declared, “Together, we are going to take on crypto, the AI industry, AIPAC and other billionaire super PACs.” He added that his goal was to help send Flanagan to the Senate, framing the campaign as a broader challenge against wealthy political interests rather than a direct attack on blockchain technology or cryptocurrency markets.

His latest comments come at a time when Crypto PAC spending has reached unprecedented levels, with industry-backed political action committees investing millions of dollars to support candidates viewed as favorable to digital asset legislation.

Crypto PAC spending emerges as a major election issue

The influence of the cryptocurrency industry in U.S. politics has expanded rapidly over the past two election cycles, transforming crypto-backed political committees into some of Washington’s biggest campaign financiers.

According to government watchdog Public Citizen, the crypto industry had contributed approximately $189 million during the current election cycle by late June, making it one of the most significant sources of political funding in recent years. The organization has repeatedly warned that large campaign contributions from emerging industries could shape public policy in ways that favor corporate interests over voters.

Much of that funding has been associated with Fairshake, one of the largest crypto-focused political action committees in the United States. Backed by major industry players including Ripple, Coinbase and venture capital firm Andreessen Horowitz, Fairshake and its affiliated organizations have directed substantial resources toward candidates from both major political parties.

Political analysts note that Crypto PAC spending has evolved beyond traditional lobbying efforts in Washington, with millions now flowing directly into competitive congressional and Senate races across the country.

Fairshake expands its reach across key congressional races

The industry’s growing political footprint has become increasingly visible throughout the 2026 campaign season.

Earlier this year, Fairshake-affiliated groups reportedly spent more than $8 million supporting candidates in closely watched primary contests across Maryland, New York and Utah. Those investments focused largely on candidates viewed as supportive of clearer regulatory frameworks for digital assets.

The organization’s influence has not been limited to Democratic contests.

In Alabama, a Fairshake-linked political committee reportedly spent more than $12 million backing Republican Senate candidate Barry Moore during his primary campaign and runoff election. The bipartisan approach reflects the industry’s broader strategy of supporting lawmakers who favor digital asset innovation regardless of party affiliation.

Meanwhile, Maryland Democratic candidate Adrian Boafo also received support from crypto-backed political organizations during his successful primary campaign.

Industry leaders have consistently argued that regulatory clarity is essential for innovation.

Ripple CEO Brad Garlinghouse has previously said, “Clear rules of the road are critical for innovation and consumer protection,” emphasizing that regulatory certainty would help the United States remain competitive in the global digital asset economy.

Similarly, Coinbase Chief Executive Brian Armstrong has repeatedly argued that balanced regulation would encourage responsible innovation while protecting consumers, urging lawmakers to establish comprehensive rules instead of relying on enforcement actions.

Against that backdrop, Crypto PAC spending continues to grow as Congress debates major digital asset legislation, including proposals designed to establish clearer market structure rules for the industry.

Sanders keeps pressure on crypto policy and political influence

While Sanders’ latest remarks focused on campaign finance rather than cryptocurrency itself, they align with his broader skepticism toward the industry’s role in public policy.

The Vermont senator did not propose banning cryptocurrencies or introduce new legislation targeting blockchain companies during the campaign event. Instead, he framed digital asset organizations as another example of wealthy interests seeking greater political influence through campaign contributions.

His criticism follows another recent effort involving crypto regulation.

In June, Sanders joined Senator Elizabeth Warren and Representative Bobby Scott in urging the U.S. Department of Labor to withdraw a proposal that would make it easier for retirement plan managers to consider cryptocurrencies and other alternative investments within 401(k) plans.

The lawmakers argued that retirement savers could face unnecessary risks because of cryptocurrency price volatility and evolving investor protections.

Warren has consistently warned that stronger oversight is necessary for the industry, previously stating, “Congress should step up and close the loopholes that allow crypto companies to put consumers, investors and our financial system at risk.”

Although the Labor Department’s proposal would not require employers to offer cryptocurrency investments, critics maintain that expanding access without stronger safeguards could expose retirement savings to greater uncertainty.

The discussion reflects a wider debate unfolding in Congress as lawmakers consider legislation covering digital asset market structure, stablecoins and investor protections.

Minnesota race highlights national debate over political money

Sanders’ endorsement of Peggy Flanagan has effectively brought the national discussion surrounding Crypto PAC spending into Minnesota’s Senate race.

His comments stopped short of outlining a specific legislative roadmap for addressing crypto-backed political funding. Instead, they reinforced his longstanding message that wealthy industries and billionaire-backed political committees wield excessive influence over American democracy.

Supporters of the crypto industry argue that political engagement is necessary to ensure lawmakers understand emerging technologies and create balanced regulations that foster innovation.

Critics, however, contend that the scale of industry contributions risks giving well-funded sectors disproportionate influence over policymaking.

With the 2026 midterm elections approaching and Congress continuing negotiations over digital asset legislation, Crypto PAC spending is expected to remain a defining issue in both campaign strategy and regulatory debates.

Fairshake and other industry-backed organizations still possess significant financial resources to support candidates across the political spectrum, while lawmakers such as Sanders continue making campaign finance reform a central part of their response.

As the election cycle intensifies, the clash between crypto-backed political organizations and their critics is likely to shape not only congressional races but also the future direction of U.S. digital asset regulation. Crypto PAC spending has become more than an election talking point—it is now a central battleground in the broader debate over money, technology and political influence in America.
