Mastercard launches Stablecoin Security to flag fraud and sanctions risk before stablecoin payments settle

The new security service combines blockchain analytics and payment intelligence to help financial institutions identify scams, sanctions exposure and suspicious transfers before funds move on-chain.

Mastercard has launched Stablecoin Security, an API that scores fraud, scam and sanctions risk before a stablecoin payment ever reaches the blockchain. Announced October 19 at Money20/20 USA in Las Vegas, the service rolls out in North America first and globally in 2027, with Borderless.xyz and Keyrails as launch partners.

Mastercard introduces Stablecoin Security for safer stablecoin payments

Mastercard’s Stablecoin Security platform is designed to evaluate transaction risks throughout the payment process, including before funds are transferred to a blockchain network.

The service operates through an application programming interface (API), allowing banks and payment providers to incorporate its risk intelligence into their existing fraud detection, compliance and case management systems.

Its screening capabilities include examining the origin of funds, transaction context, potential exposure to restricted parties and indicators associated with scams or other financial crimes.

The system can also generate a risk score before a transaction is completed. Financial institutions can use that information to determine whether a payment should proceed or receive additional scrutiny.

Ann Johnson, Mastercard’s executive vice president of Security Solutions, explained the rationale behind the launch.

According to Johnson, Stablecoins are creating new possibilities for value exchange, but financial institutions need the right intelligence and controls to participate with confidence.

The statement reflects a central challenge for Stablecoin payments: faster blockchain settlement does not automatically guarantee that the money being transferred is legitimate or that every participant meets applicable compliance requirements.

However, Mastercard has not publicly disclosed the service’s pricing, the complete list of supported blockchain networks or detailed performance figures demonstrating how effectively it detects suspicious activity.

Complex transactions increase demand for stablecoin payments security

Mastercard’s announcement points to the growing complexity of blockchain-based financial transfers as a major reason for introducing the new service.

The company cited research covering 593 million stablecoin transfer events across 141 million Ethereum transactions in 2025.

According to the findings, nearly 60% of the transfers occurred within complex, multistep transactions rather than straightforward payments between two parties.

Such transactions can involve several intermediaries, wallets and transfers across different stages of a payment journey. As a result, assessing the risk associated with the complete transaction can become more difficult for banks and payment providers.

This challenge becomes particularly relevant when businesses use stablecoins to pay overseas suppliers, settle international invoices or transfer funds between jurisdictions.

The company is also building on existing digital-asset security products, including Crypto Secure and Mastercard Crypto Credential. These initiatives address related but distinct requirements, such as cryptocurrency risk assessment and identity-related verification.

Borderless.xyz and Keyrails join Mastercard’s expansion

Mastercard has selected Borderless.xyz and Keyrails as its first partners for the Stablecoin Security initiative. Both companies participate in Mastercard’s Start Path Blockchain and Digital Assets program.

Borderless.xyz connects financial institutions with licensed stablecoin payment providers across more than 113 countries and 72 currencies. Its infrastructure helps manage payment operations and route transactions through appropriate providers.

Integrating Mastercard’s risk intelligence could help participating institutions assess transfers across multiple markets, currencies and payment providers.

Alex Garn, chief product officer at Borderless.xyz, said the partnership would support risk management while limiting operational complexity.

Keyrails, meanwhile, focuses on high-value international trade payments, particularly in emerging markets. Its participation brings the security service into a segment where businesses may depend on reliable cross-border settlement to manage suppliers and commercial obligations.

Rajpal Khangura, Keyrails’ co-founder and chief compliance officer, said the collaboration would improve risk intelligence for international trade transactions.

The partnerships demonstrate Mastercard’s approach to expanding its digital-asset business through existing financial and technology providers rather than relying exclusively on its own infrastructure.

The service will launch first in North America, with worldwide commercial availability expected in 2027. Mastercard has not yet announced a detailed global deployment schedule or confirmed the number of institutions expected to adopt the product initially.

BVNK acquisition reinforces Mastercard’s stablecoin strategy

The introduction of Stablecoin Security comes as Mastercard expands its broader digital-asset infrastructure.

In August 2026, the company completed its acquisition of BVNK, a stablecoin infrastructure provider, in a transaction valued at up to $1.8 billion.

BVNK develops technology connecting conventional currencies with blockchain-based payment systems, including infrastructure for transfers, payouts, settlement and treasury operations.

The acquisition provides Mastercard with additional capabilities for handling digital-asset transactions and connecting stablecoins with traditional financial services.

Mastercard also launched its Global Money Platform with BVNK in October, offering businesses and financial institutions access to fiat accounts, stablecoin functionality and currency conversions through a single API.

The company plans to extend Stablecoin Security through BVNK during 2027, although the precise scope and timing of that integration remain unclear.

These developments suggest that Mastercard is pursuing several complementary priorities: expanding access to blockchain-based transfers, connecting digital assets with established payment infrastructure and strengthening risk controls as adoption increases.

Stronger security infrastructure could help financial institutions become more comfortable using stablecoins for commercial payments and international settlement.

However, the announcement alone does not establish how much additional transaction volume Mastercard will capture or whether the new product will generate significant revenue.

The broader outlook for Stablecoin payments will depend on adoption by banks, businesses and payment providers, as well as the regulatory frameworks governing digital assets in different jurisdictions.

What Mastercard’s announcement means for crypto investors

Mastercard’s launch signals that established payment companies are increasingly developing infrastructure to support stablecoin transactions while addressing fraud and compliance risks.

If the service gains traction, it could help make blockchain-based payments more accessible to regulated institutions and businesses involved in international trade. Borderless.xyz and Keyrails provide initial routes into those markets, while BVNK could support further expansion.

Important indicators to monitor include institutional adoption, supported networks, international rollout progress and evidence that the service improves transaction screening without creating excessive delays or costs.

Mastercard is positioning security as an important part of the infrastructure required for stablecoins to expand beyond cryptocurrency trading and into mainstream financial activity.

Whether that approach translates into meaningful long-term growth will become clearer as the service moves from its initial deployment toward broader commercial availability.
