MoonPay hands Claude and ChatGPT the keys to spend your crypto

The new payment vault splits wallet keys across encrypted enclaves so no party — not MoonPay, not the AI, can move funds alone.

MoonPay launched PayBox on July 29, a payment vault that plugs directly into Claude and ChatGPT and lets AI agents complete transactions on a user’s behalf, rather than just research them.

The tool works by pairing a non-custodial wallet with a passkey approval system: a user tells their AI assistant what they want done, the assistant prepares the transaction, and the user signs off with a passkey before any funds move. An autonomous mode also lets users pre-set spending limits so the AI can transact without per-purchase approval.

How the security model works

PayBox splits wallet keys using multi-party computation and stores the fragments in hardware-isolated trusted execution environments, so no single party can reconstruct a full key or sign a transaction independently. Card payments route through Visa’s agentic commerce protocol, meaning the AI processes a purchase without ever seeing the underlying card number.

“This is the era where money disappears into conversation,” MoonPay CEO Ivan Soto-Wright said in the company’s launch announcement.

The infrastructure runs on technology from Sodot, an Israeli key-management firm MoonPay acquired in an all-stock deal worth roughly $100 million in April. Sodot’s systems already secure more than $50 billion in assets across over 10 million wallets for clients including eToro and BitGo.

What users can actually do with it

At launch, PayBox supports restaurant reservations, flight bookings, and shopping through major online retailers, alongside token swaps, cross-chain bridging, and deposits into DeFi protocols such as Aave. The vault supports Solana and seven Ethereum-compatible networks, including Ethereum itself, Base, Arbitrum, Polygon, Hyperliquid, Tempo, and Robinhood Chain.

PayBox also runs on x402, an open payment standard originally built by Coinbase and since handed over to the Linux Foundation, where it’s now backed by more than 20 organizations including Visa, Mastercard, Stripe, Shopify, AWS, and Anthropic. Any merchant built to accept agent-initiated payments through x402 can receive a PayBox transaction.

Part of a longer buildup

PayBox is the culmination of a string of releases MoonPay has shipped through 2026. In March, the company published an open wallet standard for AI agents backed by PayPal, the Ethereum Foundation, and the Solana Foundat
