On May 5, 2026, the Solana Foundation and Google Cloud jointly launched Pay.sh, a new payment gateway designed to enable artificial intelligence systems to transact using stablecoins. The rollout of Pay.sh introduces a model where AI agents can autonomously discover, access, and pay for digital services without relying on traditional billing systems.

At its core, Pay.sh allows software agents to make real time payments for API usage using blockchain infrastructure. Unlike subscription based systems, Pay.sh supports microtransactions, enabling payments as small as fractions of a cent per request. This approach is expected to reduce inefficiencies in how AI systems consume digital services.

The launch of Pay.sh comes amid growing interest in combining AI capabilities with decentralized financial infrastructure, positioning Pay.sh at the center of a rapidly evolving sector.

How Pay.sh works across AI and blockchain systems

Pay.sh operates as an API proxy hosted on Google Cloud, with each AI agent assigned a wallet on the Solana network. This wallet functions as both an identity layer and a payment mechanism, allowing seamless interaction between AI systems and service providers.

Through Pay.sh, agents can access a wide range of tools, including services like Gemini, BigQuery, and Vertex AI, along with more than 50 external APIs covering blockchain data, cloud infrastructure, and developer tools.

The system is built on the x402 protocol, originally developed by Coinbase and later maintained by the Linux Foundation. This protocol uses the HTTP 402 payment standard, enabling applications to complete transactions directly within web requests without requiring separate billing frameworks.

Pay.sh also integrates the Machine Payments Protocol, developed by Tempo and Stripe, which supports automated machine to machine transactions. This dual structure allows Pay.sh to support both current and emerging models of AI driven commerce.

Competition intensifies for AI payment infrastructure

The launch of Pay.sh places Solana into an increasingly competitive race to build the financial rails for AI agents.

Coinbase has already introduced Agentic.market, a platform where AI systems can purchase services using USDC through the x402 protocol. According to available data, the protocol has processed approximately 165 million transactions across hundreds of thousands of agents, with most activity occurring on Base, Coinbase’s Ethereum layer 2 network.

Meanwhile, Google has been developing its own Agent Payments Protocol in collaboration with Coinbase, the Ethereum Foundation, and MetaMask. This system uses cryptographic signatures to confirm user intent before transactions are executed, reflecting a similar design philosophy to Pay.sh.

Other players are also entering the space. MoonPay, for instance, has launched MoonAgents Card, a Mastercard linked solution that enables AI connected wallets to spend stablecoins directly.

The emergence of Pay.sh highlights a broader industry shift toward building infrastructure that allows AI systems to operate economically without human intervention.

Why Solana powers the Pay.sh model

The choice of Solana as the underlying network for Pay.sh is largely driven by performance considerations. Its low transaction fees and high speed settlement make it well suited for the microtransaction model required by AI systems.

AI agents often perform thousands of operations in a short period. In such environments, even small delays or high fees can significantly impact efficiency. Pay.sh leverages Solana’s architecture to address these constraints, enabling faster and cheaper execution of transactions.

With Pay.sh now live, the integration of AI and blockchain based payments is moving from concept to implementation. While it remains uncertain which platforms will dominate this emerging space, Pay.sh signals a clear direction for the future of digital transactions.
