BitMEX will shut down permanently on September 23, 2026, at 04:00 UTC, ending an 11-year run for one of crypto’s earliest and most influential derivatives exchanges. HDR Global Trading Limited, BitMEX’s parent company, announced the closure Thursday following a strategic review of the business and broader market conditions. New user registrations have already been suspended.

In its official statement, BitMEX described the decision as difficult but necessary after evaluating both its long-term business prospects and the evolving digital asset landscape. The company thanked customers for their loyalty over the years and encouraged them to continue their trading activities on other cryptocurrency exchanges.

“This has been an incredibly difficult decision,” BitMEX said in its announcement, adding that it remains grateful for the support of its users throughout its history.

BitMEX gives traders two months to exit positions

As part of the BitMEX shutdown process, the exchange has outlined a phased wind-down designed to allow customers enough time to safely close positions and withdraw funds.

Although trading will continue until Sept. 23, restrictions will gradually take effect. Beginning Aug. 26 at 04:00 UTC, traders will no longer be able to open new positions. Instead, they will only be permitted to reduce or close existing trades.

Over the following weeks, the exchange plans to progressively reduce outstanding positions to facilitate what it described as an orderly market closure. Any positions still open when trading officially ends will be liquidated automatically.

BitMEX also confirmed that contracts with limited liquidity may undergo early settlement under its existing procedures, with advance notice provided to affected customers.

The exchange stressed that customer assets remain fully accessible during the transition period. Even after trading stops, verified users will still be able to log into their accounts to review balances, access transaction histories, and withdraw remaining funds.

However, customers who leave assets on the platform beyond Sept. 23 will face custody charges. BitMEX said it will impose a monthly fee equivalent to $50 or 1% annually—whichever is greater—with the possibility of higher fees in the future if balances remain unclaimed after prior notice.

The company also warned customers to remain vigilant against phishing attempts, emphasizing that it does not offer any priority withdrawal service and advising users to ignore anyone claiming they can accelerate withdrawals.

BitMEX added that increased withdrawal requests and Bitcoin network confirmation times could temporarily delay processing, although all withdrawal requests will continue to be handled.

To reassure users, the exchange pointed to its publicly available Proof of Reserves and Liabilities, stating that its reserves continue to exceed customer liabilities and that all customer assets remain fully backed.

A pioneer that helped define crypto derivatives

The BitMEX shutdown represents the conclusion of one of the industry’s most influential success stories.

Founded in 2014, BitMEX played a pivotal role in transforming cryptocurrency trading by introducing perpetual swap contracts with leverage of up to 100 times. The product rapidly became the industry standard and has since been adopted by nearly every major derivatives exchange.

Throughout its announcement, the company reflected on its legacy, highlighting its commitment to security and decentralized principles.

BitMEX stated that, over more than 11 years of operation, it maintained a record of zero customer funds lost through hacking incidents, a milestone few cryptocurrency exchanges can claim.

The platform also reiterated its long-standing commitment to Bitcoin’s values of neutrality, transparency, and decentralization through its peer-to-peer operational model.

Arthur Hayes, BitMEX co-founder, has previously emphasized the platform’s role in expanding institutional-grade crypto trading. In an earlier statement reflecting on the exchange’s history, Hayes said, “BitMEX was built to create a fair and transparent marketplace for Bitcoin derivatives.”

Industry observers have long credited BitMEX with accelerating innovation in crypto trading infrastructure. According to analysts at research firm Kaiko, perpetual futures have become one of the most actively traded instruments across digital asset markets, largely due to the model popularized by BitMEX.

Leadership changes and strategic review preceded the closure

The BitMEX shutdown follows months of corporate restructuring and executive turnover.

Earlier this month, the exchange announced the departures of former Chief Executive Officer Stephan Lutz, Chief Financial Officer Ina Steiner, and Chief Growth Officer Raphael Polansky. Their exits came during a broader leadership overhaul that ultimately saw former Chief Operating Officer and General Counsel Peter Wilkinson appointed as the company’s new CEO.

The executive reshuffle followed reports that BitMEX had been exploring a potential sale as part of efforts to reposition the business.

Leadership instability has affected the company for several years. In 2020, founders Arthur Hayes, Ben Delo, and Samuel Reed stepped down after U.S. authorities accused the exchange of failing to implement adequate anti-money laundering controls under the Bank Secrecy Act. BitMEX later pleaded guilty to those charges, marking one of the most significant regulatory cases involving a cryptocurrency derivatives platform.

Former Börse Stuttgart executive Alexander Höptner subsequently became CEO in 2021 before handing leadership to Lutz in 2022 during one of the crypto market’s most challenging bear cycles.

The BitMEX shutdown now closes the final chapter of an exchange that once stood at the forefront of cryptocurrency innovation. While newer competitors have overtaken its market share in recent years, BitMEX’s influence on derivatives trading remains undeniable. From pioneering perpetual futures to demonstrating the viability of institutional-grade crypto trading infrastructure, the exchange leaves behind a legacy that continues to shape today’s digital asset markets.

As customers prepare for the final trading day in September, the BitMEX shutdown serves as another reminder of how rapidly the cryptocurrency industry continues to evolve, with even its earliest innovators facing mounting competitive, regulatory, and strategic pressures.
