Beijing police have opened a criminal case against companies linked to CreditEase and imposed compulsory measures on its two actual controllers, a day after the fintech group admitted in an apology letter that its liabilities may exceed its assets. Police did not name the suspected offences or announce formal charges.

According to a notice from the Chaoyang branch of the Beijing Municipal Public Security Bureau, the individuals targeted include a 53-year-old man surnamed Tang and a 51-year-old woman surnamed Zhao, both identified as actual controllers. Public reporting identifies Tang as CreditEase founder Tang Ning. However, police did not disclose the specific suspected offenses, detail the measures imposed on each suspect or announce formal criminal charges.

The CreditEase Criminal Investigation follows months of uncertainty over investment products whose repayments were suspended in May. The case also places the group’s financial difficulties under a legal spotlight, although the investigation itself does not establish guilt or determine how much investors will ultimately recover.

Founded in Beijing in 2006, CreditEase grew into a major participant in China’s peer-to-peer lending market before regulatory changes reshaped the industry. Its business interests subsequently extended into wealth management, loan facilitation, insurance-related services and financial technology investments.

Police have asked affected investors to register their claims and submit supporting evidence through official channels. Available options include an online reporting platform linked to the Ping An Beijing Chaoyang WeChat account, postal submissions and in-person reports at local police stations.

Required documentation includes identification, investment agreements, bank statements, transfer records and relevant communications. Authorities have also warned investors to avoid intermediaries demanding additional payments in exchange for promises of faster repayment.

Suspended payments raise fears of insolvency

The CreditEase Criminal Investigation comes after the group reportedly acknowledged that it might not possess enough assets to cover its outstanding obligations. An apology letter circulated on October 11 through applications associated with the group’s investment platforms described a serious repayment shortfall following the suspension of payments on May 22.

CreditEase attributed the crisis to declining business activity, losses across several operations, weak underlying assets and insufficient funding. According to the letter, efforts to sell assets through market transactions had failed to generate enough proceeds to meet investor obligations.

The group said preliminary financial due diligence suggested that liabilities could exceed available assets. These findings, however, were preliminary rather than a final independently audited determination of insolvency. CreditEase has not publicly established a definitive total for investor losses, a confirmed recovery rate or a final repayment timetable in the disclosures cited.

The company reportedly engaged external specialists to assess its financial position and examine the compliance of the affected investment products. Its account indicated that legal specialists could not independently complete their compliance assessment because the available transaction structures, business models and supporting information were insufficient.

That limitation should not be confused with a final finding that every product was unlawful. The police announcement likewise did not specify the suspected offenses or identify all companies and transactions under investigation.

CreditEase has said it intends to pursue overdue loans, seek buyers for assets and continue communicating with investors while working toward repayment through legally permitted procedures. Whether those efforts will generate sufficient funds remains uncertain.

The immediate concern for investors is the gap between the group’s outstanding obligations and the cash it can recover. Until authorities and the relevant businesses provide verified figures, the scale of potential losses and the likely recovery for individual customers remain unresolved.

Yiren digital revenue falls 46% as financial pressure mounts

The investigation has also intensified attention on Yiren Digital, the US-listed financial technology company associated with CreditEase. Trading on the New York Stock Exchange under the ticker YRD, the company reported a steep annual revenue decline in its second-quarter 2026 financial results released on September 30.

According to the company’s official earnings release, revenue fell 46% year over year to RMB890 million, equivalent to approximately $131.2 million. Yiren Digital also recorded a net loss of RMB449.6 million, reversing a profit of RMB357.5 million in the corresponding quarter of 2025.

Loan facilitation volumes declined 69% annually to RMB6.3 billion, reflecting reduced lending activity amid changes to China’s online lending regulatory framework. Revenue from credit solutions fell 48% to RMB777.6 million.

The figures add another dimension to the CreditEase Criminal Investigation, although Yiren Digital’s reported financial performance should not automatically be treated as evidence of criminal wrongdoing. The company has previously maintained that it operates independently of CreditEase’s affected wealth management businesses and does not conduct wealth management activities.

In its September earnings statement, Yiren Digital chairman and chief executive Tang Ning said the company had prioritized credit quality, risk-adjusted returns and a less capital-intensive operating model.

Chief financial officer William Hui separately acknowledged that the results were affected by impairments and adjustments involving legacy receivables and contract assets. He said the quarterly net loss had narrowed by 9% compared with the first quarter of 2026.

The company’s disclosures also reported a decline in cash and cash equivalents, from RMB2.45 billion at the end of March to RMB1.70 billion at the end of June. These figures provide important context for assessing its financial position but do not establish the amount of money available to satisfy claims against other CreditEase-linked entities.

Crypto investment links add another layer to the investigation

CreditEase’s investment history extends into international financial technology, including businesses connected to digital assets and blockchain-based financial services. Historical investment records have associated CreditEase-backed funds with Circle, Matrixport, Figure, Archax and Poko.

Circle is known for its USDC stablecoin, while Matrixport operates in digital-asset financial services. Figure develops blockchain-based financial services, and Archax provides digital-asset and securities infrastructure. Poko has been described in investment records as a payments infrastructure business.

These connections have attracted attention because they link CreditEase’s investment activities to companies operating across the global fintech and cryptocurrency sectors. However, historical funding participation does not establish that CreditEase still owns the investments, that the holdings remain under its control or that they can be liquidated to repay affected investors.

Crucially, Beijing police have not publicly identified these companies as participants in the suspected offenses. No verified evidence in the police announcement connects Circle, Matrixport, Figure, Archax or Poko to the alleged misconduct.

The CreditEase Criminal Investigation therefore should not be interpreted as a cryptocurrency enforcement case based solely on the group’s historical investment portfolio. The confirmed announcement concerns suspected criminal activity at CreditEase-related companies, and authorities have not publicly established that the digital-asset investments form part of the alleged offenses.

The investigation’s financial implications may nevertheless extend beyond the immediate repayment dispute if authorities identify assets held through affiliated entities. Any recovery would depend on ownership records, the legal status of the assets, creditor claims and the outcome of the investigation.

For now, investors face two separate uncertainties: whether investigators can establish the facts behind the suspected offenses and whether the group’s recoverable assets will be sufficient to meet outstanding obligations.

Beijing police have not announced a final recovery estimate, a repayment schedule or a timetable for concluding the case. The CreditEase Criminal Investigation remains ongoing, and the outcome for investors will depend on evidence gathered by investigators and the subsequent handling of assets and claims.
