Nigel Farage has said he would still accept the £5 million in Crypto donations he received from billionaire Christopher Harborne, despite renewed scrutiny over whether the gift should have been declared and the possibility of a fresh parliamentary standards investigation if he returns to the House of Commons.

Farage made the comments as he prepared to contest the Clacton by-election, after reports that he has “no regrets accepting” the money. The Reform UK leader previously maintained that he was not required to declare the payment because he was not an MP when he received it in April 2024.

The circumstances surrounding the Crypto donations, however, have continued to attract attention. Reporting by The Sunday Times revealed that Farage had negotiated an agreement with then-Reform leader Richard Tice to return to lead the party during March and April 2024.

That arrangement has raised further questions about Farage’s political status and activities at the time he received the money.

Farage initially said Harborne’s payment was intended to cover his security costs for the remainder of his life. He later described it as an “unconditional gift” connected to his campaigning for Brexit.

He subsequently said there were no restrictions on how he could use the money, telling reporters: “I can spend it on cars if I want to” — Nigel Farage, Reform UK leader.

Crypto donations face renewed scrutiny

The controversy over the Crypto donations comes against the backdrop of an investigation by Parliamentary Standards Commissioner Daniel Greenberg, which was already examining Farage before he resigned as an MP on July 7.

The central question surrounding the payment has been whether Farage should have declared the money given the circumstances under which it was received and his political activities at the time.

Farage has previously argued that he was not required to declare the gift because he was not serving as an MP when the payment arrived in April 2024. The issue became more complicated following revelations about his discussions with Tice over a potential return to the leadership of Reform UK.

The Times has reported that Farage and his team did not realize that the standards investigation could be reopened if he resigned as an MP and subsequently returned to Parliament through a by-election.

That possibility has now become particularly relevant as Farage seeks to regain his seat in Clacton.

If he wins the by-election, the investigation is expected to be reopened, putting the circumstances surrounding the Crypto donations back under parliamentary scrutiny.

The potential return of the investigation means the £5 million payment could remain an issue even after the Clacton contest concludes.

Farage says he would take crypto donations again

Asked whether he would still have accepted Harborne’s £5 million payment if he had known how much scrutiny it would later attract, Farage said he would have done so.

He linked his decision partly to the death of Ann Widdecombe and argued that his security requirements would remain significant for the rest of his life.

“I’ll need security till the day I die,” Farage said, adding: “You can see that around me now” — Nigel Farage, Reform UK leader.

His remarks came after two members of the public heckled him and questioned him about the £5 million gift.

The exchange has kept the issue of Crypto donations at the center of attention as Farage campaigns for a return to Parliament.

Farage’s position is that the money was a legitimate personal gift, while the continuing standards questions focus on whether the circumstances surrounding the payment created an obligation to declare it.

The distinction could become significant if the investigation resumes following the election.

By-election could reopen crypto donations case

Farage has also made clear that he would prefer not to face another standards investigation if he wins in Clacton.

“If I get the result I want, if Standards decide that they want to do it again, well, I think they’d look rather silly,” — Nigel Farage, Reform UK leader.

He characterized the broader political establishment as hostile toward Reform UK and presented a strong electoral result as a response to what he described as efforts to disadvantage the party.

Farage also attacked parody candidate Count Binface, calling him the “Establishment candidate.”

He argued that securing a large majority would send a message to what he called an establishment that had “done its best over the last few months, not to give us an even break, literally on anything”.

The Clacton result could therefore have consequences beyond Farage’s immediate return to Parliament. A victory would potentially trigger renewed scrutiny of the Crypto donations, while also giving Farage another opportunity to defend his handling of the £5 million payment.

The controversy illustrates the continuing political sensitivity surrounding large Crypto donations, particularly when significant private funds intersect with political campaigning, leadership negotiations and parliamentary standards.

Whether the matter returns to the standards process could ultimately depend on the result of the Clacton by-election and Farage’s return to Parliament.

The Crypto donations issue is therefore unlikely to disappear with the campaign itself. If Farage is re-elected, the circumstances surrounding the £5 million gift could once again become a formal parliamentary matter.
