A Moscow court ordered BitRiver founder Igor Runets moved from house arrest to pretrial detention on July 29, as Russian investigators pursue fraud charges tied to an alleged $12.5 million scheme involving mining equipment supplied to En+ Group.

The decision, handed down by Moscow’s Zamoskvoretsky District Court on July 29, follows a request from Russian investigators seeking tougher restrictions on Runets while authorities continue examining evidence and interviewing key witnesses. Prosecutors argued that allowing the executive to remain under house arrest could create opportunities for witness interference during the ongoing investigation.

Runets is accused of causing substantial financial losses to Russian industrial conglomerate En+ Group through the supply of mining equipment that investigators claim resulted in significant damages. The case represents another setback for BitRiver, which is already battling financial instability and bankruptcy proceedings.

Court tightens restrictions as fraud investigation deepens

The latest ruling means the Igor Runets arrest has moved into a more serious phase, with the BitRiver founder expected to remain in pretrial detention for at least two months while investigators advance their case.

Russian authorities charged Runets under Part 4 of Article 159 of the Russian Criminal Code, a provision covering large-scale fraud allegedly committed by an organized group. The offense carries severe legal consequences if proven in court.

According to investigators, the stricter detention measures were necessary because of the scale of the alleged financial damage and concerns that Runets could potentially influence witnesses connected to En+ Group if he remained under house arrest.

Court officials also indicated that the pace of the investigation will depend heavily on expert examinations of the cryptocurrency mining equipment involved as well as testimony from representatives of En+ Group.

Neither BitRiver nor legal representatives for Runets had publicly commented on the court’s decision at the time of publication.

The latest development comes months after Russian authorities initially detained Runets in February over separate allegations involving tax evasion. Investigators previously accused him of concealing assets to avoid paying tax obligations, resulting in his placement under house arrest before the latest fraud allegations emerged.

BitRiver faces mounting financial challenges

The Igor Runets arrest comes at an especially difficult period for BitRiver, one of Russia’s best-known cryptocurrency mining companies.

The mining firm has recently entered bankruptcy proceedings amid growing financial pressure, raising uncertainty over its future ownership and operations.

Its parent company, Fox Group, reportedly accumulated debts estimated at around $9.2 million before filing for bankruptcy after failing to secure sufficient assets or financing to meet its obligations.

The financial troubles have added another layer of uncertainty to BitRiver’s business, which has played a prominent role in Russia’s cryptocurrency mining industry. Russia has become one of the world’s leading Bitcoin mining destinations thanks to its relatively low electricity costs and abundant energy resources, making companies like BitRiver important participants in the country’s digital asset infrastructure.

Industry analysts have noted that prolonged legal proceedings involving senior executives can complicate restructuring efforts, particularly when companies are already navigating financial distress.

Legal experts say investigation could take months

Russian authorities have indicated that the investigation remains active and that additional evidence must be reviewed before the matter proceeds further.

According to the court, forensic examinations of the disputed mining equipment and statements from En+ Group witnesses are expected to play a central role in determining the next steps of the criminal proceedings.

Legal experts generally note that complex financial fraud investigations involving technical equipment and corporate transactions often require extensive forensic analysis before prosecutors finalize their cases.

Meanwhile, the Igor Runets arrest has drawn attention across Russia’s cryptocurrency sector, where mining companies continue operating under increasing regulatory scrutiny. Although cryptocurrency mining remains legal in several parts of Russia, authorities have steadily tightened oversight of financial reporting, taxation, and corporate compliance involving digital asset businesses.

The latest court action underscores how enforcement agencies are increasingly willing to pursue high-profile investigations involving major players in the crypto mining industry when allegations of financial misconduct arise.

Industry watches closely as case unfolds

The Igor Runets arrest is expected to remain closely watched by cryptocurrency businesses, investors, and legal observers as prosecutors continue building their case.

While the allegations remain unproven and Runets is presumed innocent unless found guilty in court, the court’s decision to replace house arrest with pretrial detention signals that investigators convinced the judge stronger preventive measures were warranted during the investigation.

The outcome could have broader implications for BitRiver’s restructuring efforts as well as confidence in Russia’s cryptocurrency mining sector, which has experienced rapid growth despite ongoing regulatory and geopolitical challenges.

As the investigation progresses, authorities will continue examining technical evidence alongside witness testimony before determining whether the case proceeds to trial. For now, the Igor Runets arrest marks one of the most significant legal developments involving a major Russian cryptocurrency mining executive this year.

“Pretrial detention is a preventive measure and does not constitute a determination of guilt,” is a principle recognized under criminal justice systems, including Russian criminal procedure, where defendants remain presumed innocent until proven guilty in court.

Commenting on corporate governance risks in the crypto sector, John Reed Stark has repeatedly argued that transparency, internal controls, and regulatory compliance are becoming increasingly important as digital asset businesses mature, particularly when companies face financial or legal challenges.
